Many new mums wonder, "Can I breastfeed without a cover in public?"

The answer is absolutely! It has never been illegal to breastfeed in public in Jersey. Whilst some mums prefer the privacy of a cover, breastfeeding is a natural and healthy way to nourish your baby and you should not feel that you need to cover up you or your baby whilst breastfeeding unless you wish to.  The more mums that breastfeeding in public the more it normalises breastfeeding in public!

Here are my top 5 tips for breastfeeding in public for the first time and feeling a bit nervous.

Practice Makes Perfect: Conquer those nerves by practicing breastfeeding at home first! Feed your baby in front of a mirror or with a trusted friend

to get comfortable with positioning and discreetness.

•  Dress for Success: Choose comfy clothes with easy access for nursing. Nursing bras, loose shirts, or dresses with flaps/buttons make life easier!

•  Find Your Spot: Pick a location that feels comfortable. You could also look for designated nursing areas, quiet corners in cafes, or parks with benches.

•  Embrace the Cover(Optional): If you prefer privacy, a light scarf or nursing cover can offer a sense of security.

But remember, your baby often provides natural coverage!

•  Know Your Rights: Most places welcome breastfeeding mums. If you encounter negativity, politely remind them of your legal right to feed your baby.

At Breastfeeding Jersey, I celebrate your breastfeeding journey and empower you to feed your baby with confidence, wherever you are.
