A guide to success
Tip 1: Plan, Prepare, Pump
Returning to work after having a baby can be overwhelming, but with adequate planning, it becomes more manageable. Begin by exploring your workplace policies regarding breastfeeding or expressing milk. Most employers now recognize the significance of supporting working mothers in their breastfeeding journey. Understand your rights and discuss your needs with your employer well before your return. Consider creating a designated space where you feel comfortable expressing milk, storing it, and cleaning your equipment. This will help establish a routine and maintain your milk supply. It may be that you negotiate working from home with access to feed your baby directly. If you are pumping at work, consider wearing clothes that offer easy access to use a pump, or breastfeeding if you are able to feed during your working day. Returning to work will look different for every parent.
Tip 2: Establish a Seamless Transition
Depending on the age of your baby you may choose to express and use a bottle or formula during working hours and breast when you are home. Gradually transitioning from direct breastfeeding to bottle feeding or expressing can ease the process for both you and your baby. Start introducing your baby to a bottle or cup of expressed milk a few weeks before your return to work. This allows them time to adjust and become familiar with the different feeding methods. Additionally, explore different feeding positions and techniques to ensure a comfortable and efficient process. Seek guidance and support from a breastfeeding coach to ensure a smooth transition.
Tip 3: Prioritise Self-Care
Returning to work often means juggling multiple responsibilities, leaving little time for self-care. However, maintaining your own well-being is crucial for successful breastfeeding. Stay hydrated, eat nutritious meals, and make time for rest and relaxation. Engage in gentle exercises such as stretching or walking to alleviate stress and maintain a positive mindset. Chiropractic care can also provide relief from physical discomforts and support your overall well-being during this busy period as you ease back into working at a desk after caring for a baby which may have been a more active time.
